On the outskirts of the city stands the most revered attraction in the South of the country, Blarney castle a must while touring Ireland. A stone structure made famous for its ‘Blarney Stone’. Ireland is the only country in the world where we can get away with hanging people off the top of a castle to kiss a stone in the hope they will be blessed with the ‘gift of the gab’ or ‘eloquent speech’ in doing so. The castle was home to the McCarthy clan, a family whose head, Cormac, was made famous in the movie ‘Braveheart’ as the King of Munster. This man gave three-thousand men to Robert the Bruce for him to take on the might of the British army, something which was also depicted in the ‘Braveheart’ movie. Blarney also has magnificent manicured gardens for the green fingered among you and the castle is great for photo opportunities. Finally, the Blarney woollen store which boasts itself as the ‘biggest Irish shop in the world’ is also nearby for all your souvenirs.
